Responsibilities
- Deliver instructor-led and virtual (VILT) technical training to cohorts - facilitate the session, manage energy and timing, and keep a mixed-skill room engaged and moving
- Read the room in real time - watch faces, questions, and lab progress - and adjust pace, depth, sequence, and examples to the learners actually present, without abandoning the learning objectives
- Run the hands-on labs - get learners doing rather than watching, circulate and unblock, and recover a lab that breaks or runs long without losing the room
- Field deep technical learner questions credibly - answer what you know, show how to find what you do not, park what needs a SME, and never bluff
- Assess and certify learners against a defined competency bar - deliver knowledge checks and practical exams, hold the pass standard, and give honest, specific feedback
- Feed the delivery signal back to the course team - what confuses every cohort, which lab breaks, where the material is stale - as specific, evidence-backed input for the designer (../../023_Technical_Instructional_Designer/) and author (../../025_Curriculum_Developer_Technical_Education/)
- Prepare to teach - rehearse a new or updated course, dry-run the labs, confirm the environment works, and stay current on the product so the room trusts you
- Improve your own delivery craft and, when senior, help certify and mentor other instructors (train-the-trainer)
The essence of this seat
The Technical Instructor is the person who teaches - the seat that takes a designed course and authored materials and turns them into learners who can actually do the thing.
Signature move
Read the room before you commit to the plan. The first move in any session is to take the read - the level mix, the energy, where lab progress actually is - and set pace, depth, and examples to the learners in front of you, because the agenda is a hypothesis and the room is the data
What good looks like
reads and confirms the split rather than plowing the run-sheet; re-anchors the fundamental for the lost half and hands the experts a stretch instead of averaging to the middle; protects the objectives by compressing later; separates the in-the-moment delivery fix from a signal to route if it recurs
Decision rights
- - how you facilitate and pace the live session, how you adapt depth, sequence, and examples to the room, how you run the labs and unblock learners, how you field a technical question in the moment, the competency call on whether a learner meets the certification bar, and the delivery-quality signal you send back to design and authoring
What this role does
The Technical Instructor is the person who teaches - the seat that takes a designed course and authored materials and turns them into learners who can actually do the thing. This is an individual-contributor, delivery-facing seat: you facilitate instructor-led and virtual classes, run the hands-on labs, read the room and adjust pace and depth in real time, field the deep technical questions a live cohort throws at you, and certify learners against a competency bar you hold. You teach a repeatable course to a cohort of many learners - not one customer, one time. You partner with the course designer and the content author (who give you the course and the materials), the program manager (who owns your schedule and roster), the product and engineering SMEs (your source of truth for the hard answer), and the learners and their managers. Measured on learner outcomes, course satisfaction, pass / certification rates, and delivery volume. What separates great from average here is reading a live room and making the material land for the learners actually in front of you, then certifying honestly. A weak instructor reads the slides at one pitch, lectures through the lab, bluffs the hard question, and waves everyone through the cert. A strong one meets a mixed-skill room where it is, gets hands on keyboards early and unblocks fast, handles the edge-case question without pretending, holds the pass bar so a certificate means something, and feeds the specific thing that is not landing back to the designer and author. You do not design the course, author the materials, own the calendar, or run the education function - you deliver the course and you certify the learner.
