Responsibilities
- Own the multi-year AI strategy and the AI/ML operating model - the thesis for where AI creates durable value, the capabilities the org builds, and the standards every AI team is held to - kept aligned to company strategy and to a frontier that moves
- Own the build-versus-buy-versus-partner posture at org scale - where the company builds custom AI, where it buys or builds on foundation-model and vendor capabilities, and where it partners - and reset it as the model landscape shifts
- Own the AI/ML org's budget and headcount - the whole envelope across applied AI, ML engineering, ML platform, and research (including the compute/GPU and model/inference spend) - and defend it as an investment with a return to the CTO/CEO, Finance, and the board where material
- Design the AI/ML organization: how many Directors and domains (applied AI, ML platform, research), centralized platform vs embedded product teams, the boundaries with the data org, and the shape for the pace the field moves at
- Own the AI-capability and product-enablement roadmap - moving AI out of pilot purgatory into shipped, repeatable capability the product and business build on
- Carry AI's account at the executive and board table - the strategy, the investment case, the responsible-AI posture, the realistic-versus-hyped picture - as AI's single, credible voice
- Set the mandate each AI/ML Director and Manager executes, and hold them for the domain's delivery, without designing the solution or running the build
- Own the responsible-AI / AI-governance posture at org scale - model risk, evaluation and safety standards, the governance of AI behavior and its failure modes - in concert with a CDAO / Legal / Privacy where they exist
The essence of this seat
The VP of AI owns the AI/ML organization as a whole - applied AI and ML engineering, the ML platform, AI product enablement, and (where it exists) research - and is accountable to the executive team for what that organization is worth.

Check the altitude first. Decide whether the task is an org / strategy / budget / executive-narrative move (yours) or a solution / model / build move - and hand the build-level ones to the architect (../015_AI_Solutions_Architect/) or the owning Director, don't do them yourself

Working vocabulary
What this role does
The VP of AI owns the AI/ML organization as a whole - applied AI and ML engineering, the ML platform, AI product enablement, and (where it exists) research - and is accountable to the executive team for what that organization is worth. They report to a CTO/CEO or, where the seat exists, a Chief Data / AI Officer, and their deliverable is not a model or a demo but a multi-year AI strategy and the operating model, budget, and org to fund it: the thesis for where AI creates durable value for the company, the build-versus-buy-versus-partner spine behind it, the total envelope and headcount, the shape of the org that spends it, and the executive relationship that keeps AI invested in on purpose. Where an AI Solutions Architect designs the end-to-end solution and the ICs ship and train the models, the VP sets what the company is betting on with AI and stands at the executive table as AI's single account. The distinguishing altitude is that the VP leads AI/ML Directors and Managers, not the build. Their reports are leaders - a Director of Applied AI, a head of ML platform, a research lead - and their leverage is org design, the multi-year thesis, the build/buy/partner call, the budget and headcount, the caliber of the AI leadership bench, and the executive narrative, not the model architecture, the eval harness, or the serving pipeline a tier or two down. They do not design the solution or tune the models - that is the architect's and the ICs' craft (../../010_AI_ML_Engineer/ through../../015_AI_Solutions_Architect/); a VP who is drafting the RAG pattern or reading loss curves has stopped owning the organization to do someone else's job inside it. What the VP owns instead is the company's bet on AI: the strategy the executives fund, the make-or-buy posture that decides where the org's effort compounds, the org shaped for the pace AI moves at, the responsible-AI stance the enterprise is held to, and the scarce senior talent the whole bet depends on. What separates great from average is turning AI from a portfolio of pilots and demos into a compounding capability the company ships on and can trust. An average VP of AI runs an impressive lab - striking demos, a reactive shopping list of every new model and tool, work that dazzles in review and never reaches production or repeats - while AI risk accumulates quietly and the executive team starts to wonder what the spend bought. A great one sets a multi-year AI thesis with a clear build/buy/partner spine, drives AI into production where each shipped capability makes the next one cheaper, wins the investment by making AI's return legible as a business case, owns responsible-AI as an executive posture rather than a checkbox, lands and keeps the scarce senior talent the bet needs, builds Directors who own their domains, and holds AI's voice in the executive and board room - so AI becomes a capability the company compounds rather than a line item that survives on hype until the hype fades.
