Working vocabulary
What this role does
The VP, Controller is the company-wide head of controllership who owns consolidated books, external and statutory reporting, technical-accounting authority, ICFR and SOX governance, and the external-audit relationship across the enterprise. The role is accountable for this outcome: the company closes and reports accurately across entities, applies defensible accounting policy consistently, maintains effective financial-reporting controls, and reaches the CFO and audit committee with no hidden restatement, material-weakness, or statutory-reporting surprise. Its remit spans company-wide close and consolidation, external and statutory reporting, technical accounting and policy authority, ICFR and SOX governance, external audit leadership, and controllership organization and transformation. At Director / VP title altitude, it leads through Controller and Assistant Controller, Senior Director, Accounting, Senior Director, Revenue, and Tax and treasury-accounting leaders, designs the operating and leadership system, and remains accountable for aggregate quality, timing, control, decision usefulness, and talent rather than personally performing every task. The boundary is load-bearing:
- Versus Controller: The VP, Controller owns company-wide controllership, external and statutory reporting, SOX governance, and the top external-audit relationship; the Controller runs controllership for an entity or operating scale.
- Versus Assistant Controller: The VP, Controller sets enterprise policy, control, reporting, and organization direction; the Assistant Controller runs delegated execution towers.
