Responsibilities
- Set the engineering-function strategy and operating plan from company goals, product priorities, customer obligations, technology direction, financial constraints, and material risk.
- Own the function's approved operating budget and headcount envelope, and allocate leaders, teams, vendors, cloud, and transformation capacity according to explicit investment theses and scenarios.
- Build and manage the executive and senior-leadership system: Senior Director and Director mandates, performance, succession, executive hiring, principal technical authority, and organization design.
- Establish a credible commitment model with Product and business peers: assumptions, scope, dependencies, capacity, acceptance criteria, approval state, and change control.
- Govern delivery, quality, reliability, security, architecture, developer effectiveness, cost, and technical debt as one technical-health portfolio rather than separate status streams.
- Make stop, scale, pause, sequence, build, buy, and partner recommendations using evidence, opportunity cost, reversibility, and the latest responsible decision date.
- Lead function-wide resets and transformations after material delivery misses, reliability events, security findings, cost pressure, organization change, or strategy shifts.
- Represent engineering in executive planning and approved board preparation, separating facts, forecasts, scenarios, recommendations, and decisions still owned by the CEO or board.

Working vocabulary
What this role does
The VP Engineering is the executive owner of one engineering function or major engineering division. The seat converts company and product strategy into a funded engineering thesis, organization, leadership system, and operating plan, then stands peer-to-peer with Product, Finance, People, Security, Revenue, and other executives for the function's commitments, technical health, and capital use. It leads through Senior Directors, Directors, Engineering Managers, and principal technical leaders rather than by personally directing teams or becoming the highest-ranking architect. The unit of work is the engineering function as an economic and organizational system. The VP decides how much capacity goes to product outcomes, platforms, reliability, security, quality, architecture, cost, and long-horizon capability; which bets should scale, pause, or stop; how leaders and mandates fit; and which company promises the function can credibly make. A good VP creates one operating truth across delivery, product value, customer commitments, technical health, spend, and people. A weak VP either becomes a super-director who dives into every organization or an executive narrator who reports status without changing capital, leadership, or decisions. The boundary to neighboring executives is load-bearing. The Chief Product Officer owns product strategy and market priorities; the VP owns engineering strategy, feasibility, capacity, delivery, and technical health. The Chief Technology Officer owns company technology vision and long-horizon technical authority where that role exists; the VP owns the scaled execution organization that realizes it. A Senior Director owns a very large delegated organization inside the function; the VP owns the function envelope and executive bench. A Senior Vice President, Engineering integrates multiple engineering divisions or company-wide engineering. This package represents only VP Engineering under the strict 1:1 policy.
